Nikki Sanderson Recalls Her Mother’s Terrifying Health Emergency
Nikki’s life changed dramatically in November 2021 when her mother, Jude, suffered two cardiac arrests. With no time to lose, Nikki and her brother, James, were guided through emergency procedures by a call handler from the emergency services.
Their actions, alongside the swift arrival of paramedics, helped save Jude’s life.
Appearing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Thursday, October 15, Jude recalled sensing that something was wrong and contacting her children for help.
“I was at home and I had the sense to ring my children because I knew there was something not quite right,” she explained, adding that she considered herself very fortunate.
Nikki, who is widely recognised for playing Maxine Minniver in Hollyoaks and Candice Stowe in Coronation Street , described the experience as deeply traumatic.
“It was extremely traumatic,” she said, explaining that for the first few years afterwards, she struggled to talk about what had happened because of how close she and her brother were to their mother.
The actress praised James for his role in the emergency and highlighted just how physically demanding CPR can be.
“It’s strenuous to be able to do CPR,” Nikki explained. “If you’re doing it correctly, it’s hard. But you just don’t stop.”
Why Nikki and Her Mother Are Supporting a New CPR Campaign
Following their experience, Nikki and Jude have joined forces with St John Ambulance to raise awareness of the importance of immediate CPR. Their involvement comes as the charity launches a campaign designed to tackle one particular barrier: men’s concerns about performing life-saving first aid on women.
A survey of UK adults conducted by Censuswide on behalf of St John Ambulance found that three in 10 men would hesitate to give CPR because they feared being accused of inappropriate touching. One in five also said they would worry about someone filming them.
The charity warns that such hesitation can have devastating consequences.
According to St John Ambulance, around 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur across the UK each year, with fewer than one in 10 victims estimated to survive.
The campaign aims to remind people that when someone’s heart stops, immediate action can make a crucial difference.
Jude Explains How CPR Helped Save Her Life
Jude believes the CPR performed by her children was vital to her survival, particularly because it helped keep oxygen circulating to her brain before emergency medical professionals arrived.
She explained that doctors had warned she could suffer brain damage if she survived.
However, the fact that Nikki and James had carried out CPR helped maintain the oxygen supply her brain needed.
“They said I would be brain-damaged if I survived,” Jude recalled. “But then when they heard that the children had done the CPR, that’s the reason the oxygen kept going.”
Her experience has given her a powerful message for anyone who might hesitate to help a woman experiencing cardiac arrest.
“As a woman, if it happens, please, that person, it isn’t just a woman. That’s somebody who desperately wants you to save their life,” she said.
Jude urged people to put their fears aside and act, stressing that if she collapsed in the street, her priority would simply be for someone to help her survive.
“I wouldn’t care who it was, please save my life,” she added.
For Nikki and Jude, sharing their story is about more than revisiting a frightening family experience. They hope it will encourage people to overcome their hesitation, learn CPR and recognise that taking action in an emergency could give someone the chance to live.
