The Locked Study
The next morning, Arthur left for a meeting in the city.
Victoria waited until his car disappeared beyond the gates before ordering Elena to polish the upstairs study.
The room had belonged to Arthur’s late wife and was rarely opened.
Elena noticed the study door was already unlocked.
Inside, drawers had been pulled open and papers shifted from their usual places.
On the desk sat a folder marked with the Whitman family trust.
Elena heard footsteps and quickly stepped back.
Victoria entered, startled to find her there.
Victoria: Why are you touching private documents?
Elena: I was only cleaning, ma’am.
Victoria snatched the folder and locked it inside a cabinet.
Later, Leo whispered that Victoria had been visiting the study every night after everyone went to bed.
He had once seen her copying numbers from his father’s papers.
Elena told him never to follow her again.
