Doctors later gave him the all-clear, but the treatment left permanent consequences.

Earlier this year, John confirmed that he would not sing on stage again because of the effects of the surgeries.

His voice had been central to his identity for more than half a century.

Giving that part of his life up was another enormous adjustment.

Yet his legacy has never sounded louder

The extraordinary turnout at Rod Laver Arena offered a remarkable contrast to John’s quieter life at home.

He could no longer perform.

He could not attend the concert.

And yet his music filled one of the biggest arenas in the country through the voices of artists who had been inspired by him, worked alongside him or simply admired him.
