Coronation Street is set for another family clash next week as Ross Wilkes attempts to bring the men of the family closer together through boxing. But his old-fashioned beliefs soon create problems for Tyrone Dobbs, particularly when Tyrone’s daughter Ruby expresses an interest in the sport.
With Ross increasingly influencing his son’s decisions, Tyrone will have to decide whether to stand up for his wife, Fiz, and his daughters — or continue trying to win his father’s approval.
Ross Pushes Tyrone and Dorin Into the Boxing Ring
Ross believes boxing is the perfect way for the men in the family to bond. After visiting a boxing club with Tyrone and young Dorin, he takes things a step further by buying the boy his own pair of boxing gloves.
Before long, Ross is encouraging Tyrone and his son to spar in the middle of the living room.
Unfortunately, neither Tyrone nor Dorin seems particularly enthusiastic about the idea, but Ross appears unable to understand their reluctance.
A Coronation Street insider described Ross’s outlook as extremely old-fashioned, joking that his views have barely advanced beyond those of a caveman.
The source also suggested that Tyrone is desperate to build a relationship with his father and impress him, but doing so could come at the expense of the women closest to him.
Ruby’s Boxing Ambitions Trigger a Sexist Reaction
Things take a more uncomfortable turn when Ruby decides she wants to try boxing herself. Unlike Tyrone and Dorin, she quickly discovers that she enjoys the sport.
Her parents, Fiz and Tyrone, are pleased to see her finding a positive outlet for her frustration and anger.
They are particularly encouraged by the prospect of Ruby channelling her emotions through a healthy activity rather than following the more destructive path associated with her sister Hope.
Ross, however, is far from impressed.
When Tyrone notices his father’s disapproval, he initially tells Ruby that boxing is not for girls, claiming he is worried she might get hurt. His reaction prompts Hope to defend her sister, pointing out the sexism behind his attitude.
Tyrone eventually changes his mind and reverses his decision, allowing Ruby’s enthusiasm for boxing to stand. But with Ross unlikely to approve, the disagreement could become another source of tension between father and son.
Ross Interferes in Tyrone and Fiz’s Marriage
Convinced that the women in Tyrone’s life have too much influence over him, Ross decides to offer his son some advice about marriage and fatherhood.
The pair are drinking at the pub when Fiz messages Tyrone, asking him to pick up popcorn for their planned family movie night.
Rather than encouraging Tyrone to respond, Ross tells him to ignore the message. Knowing his son may struggle to refuse, he takes Tyrone’s phone and puts it in his pocket before ordering another pint.
Ross appears to believe that Fiz should not have so much say over her husband’s evening. His attitude becomes even clearer when he sends Tyrone home drunk, convinced that having a few drinks is simply a man’s right.
Fiz is not impressed by her husband’s condition. She sends him to bed and makes it clear that his behaviour has not gone unnoticed.
Fiz Confronts Her Father-in-Law
The following day, Tyrone reveals that Ross took his phone while they were at the pub. Furious at the interference, Fiz decides to confront her father-in-law directly.
Her anger is understandable: Ross has not only undermined her plans for the family evening but has also encouraged Tyrone to disregard his responsibilities at home.
However, confronting Ross could prove risky if he refuses to back down. With his influence over Tyrone growing, Fiz may find herself caught in an increasingly difficult family dispute.
Will Tyrone finally stand up to his father and support Fiz and the girls? Or will Ross’s determination to impose his traditional beliefs create even more trouble for the Dobbs family?
One thing is clear: the boxing gloves may be the least of their problems.
