The Photograph In The Drawer
That afternoon, Elena returned to the study after Victoria left for a charity luncheon.
She did not touch the locked cabinet.
Instead, she searched only for signs that might explain Victoria’s interest in the room.
Inside an unlocked side drawer, Elena found an old photograph of Arthur, his late wife, and a much younger Leo standing beside a family lawyer named Martin Hale.
On the back, Arthur’s wife had written a short message about protecting Leo’s future.
Elena remembered Martin. He had handled the estate after Leo’s mother died.
That evening, Victoria returned in a foul mood after receiving a phone call.
Elena overheard only fragments from the hallway.
Victoria: No, I need the signatures before he changes anything.
There was a pause.
Victoria: The boy is still the beneficiary. That is the problem.
Elena froze.
The words were no longer enough to dismiss as suspicion.
Victoria’s plans were tied directly to Leo’s inheritance.
