Vanessa’s Warning

Vanessa stood near the staircase with an expression Adrian had never seen before.

The softness was gone.

The tears were gone.

What remained was resentment.

“You want the truth?” she asked. “Fine. Clara was going to ruin everything.”

Olivia folded her arms. “By saving Emma?”

Vanessa looked at her sharply.

“Stay out of this.”

“No.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“Tell me what Clara was going to ruin.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You really don’t know?”

She reached for her handbag.

Adrian blocked the door.

“You’re not leaving until you explain.”

Vanessa stared at him for several seconds.

Then she said, “Clara found the account.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“What account?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Olivia looked toward the office.

“Dad… maybe you should check your company login.”

Adrian turned to her.

“What are you talking about?”

“I saw Vanessa in your office last week. She was using your computer.”

Vanessa’s face changed again.

That was enough.

Adrian walked quickly to his office, opened his laptop, and checked the financial dashboard for his consulting firm.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then he saw a set of transfers he did not recognize.

Small amounts at first.

Then larger ones.

All sent to a vendor account he had never approved.

He clicked the vendor profile.

The mailing address belonged to a company registered under Vanessa’s brother’s name.

Adrian felt sick.

“You stole from me.”

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

“I moved money you never would have missed.”

Olivia stared at her.

“That’s your defense?”

Vanessa ignored her.

“Clara found one of the invoices. She confronted me. She said she was going to tell you.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

So Clara had not merely been targeted because Vanessa disliked her.

She had been targeted because she knew the truth.

“And the stroller?” he asked.

Vanessa’s silence answered him.

Adrian opened his eyes.

“You were trying to make Clara look dangerous so I would throw her out.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“I needed you to stop trusting her.”

“You put Emma at risk.”

“I knew Clara would catch it.”

Olivia recoiled.

“You used a baby as part of your plan.”

Vanessa snapped, “Nothing was supposed to happen!”

May you like

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“But something could have.”

He picked up his phone.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Who are you calling?”

“The police.”

For the first time that night, Vanessa looked truly afraid.
